Origins

CARDINAL SURFBOARDS : Origins. The Hard Core.

If you're looking for authenticity and uncompromising performance, you've come to the right place. CARDINAL SURFBOARDS, is a perf, core and authentic surfboard brand. We're not for everyone. Our boards are for surfers who've had their fill of sand and want something a little more edgy.

DNA: Self-taught shaper and Core culture

I started making boards officially in 1991. In my parents' garage, with no regard for safety rules. I had to learn a bit on my own, and being self-taught, there were quite a few failures.

The quest for knowledge : Back then, in France, shapers wouldn't give up. It was often “back off man, this is our business”. So our technical “Bible” was the Design Forum of American magazines. Surfing and Surfing Magazine. We read, dissected and tested.

Influences : Our culture is American, very strong, very raw. Metal, rigor and the “Fletcher attitude”. And to complete the picture: the discipline of martial arts. Because to really understand a technique, you have to know how to observe, how to repeat, and never give up when it stings.

A technological lead forged abroad

Our demands forced us to get out of the system. I traveled to the United States and Hawaii, but not as a tourist, as a professional: observing, documenting, analyzing workshop availability, methods, details that make all the difference.

Precision pioneers : As early as 2003, we integrated CNC (Numerical Control), at a time when it was still confidential. The result: up to 3 years ahead of France, and over 10 years of work under license for Sharp Eye and T&C Hawaii. Yes, we're talking about real references.

The Technological Imperative: Then came the transition to the APS 3000 machine, followed by the DYNO D. The goal is simple: a clean, even rail - and a finish that meets the needs of expert surfers (those who feel everything and forgive nothing).

Technical rigor and precision

Our commitment: uncompromising quality and rigor

Our geographical position (between Bordeaux and Nantes) meant that we had to be 100 % self-sufficient. Here, if you want it done right, you do it yourself. So we control everything from design to packaging. And that's what guarantees us absolute rigor.

Uncompromising quality: We work with a complete history and an intranet that frames everything: time, cost, stratification, bread density. We aim for excellence, not “good enough”. And each stage has its own specialist - because that's how we produce clean, consistent, solid boards.

Zero littering: We're also committed to the environment. We won the Eurosima Innovation 2008 for our BioBoard. Simply put: we've proved that performance and sustainability can go hand in hand... when you take things seriously.

CARDINAL SURFBOARDS

Today, we are part of the dynamic of the Shapers Club Cardinal: a collective of artisans combining the historic skills of the UWL workshop. Cardinal is a spin-off from UWL - but the team is the same. And the same high standards. Renaud still shapes each board, with the same specialized technicians (sander, machine operator, laminator) who have surrounded him for years.

This development reinforces our autonomy and, above all, the transmission of know-how within a 100 % French workshop, where each board continues to be produced under the Shapers Club.

CARDINAL SURFBOARDS : we're the French alternative, accessible and technical, with a core DNA inspired by the world's great brands - but made here, cleanly, by people who know. but made right here, by people who know. For demanding surfers who understand the value of precise craftsmanship and constant innovation.
